What is Flam Arresters
Flame Arresters (also spelt Flame Arrestors) are safety devices used to stop or prevent the spread of flame in gas pipelines, vent lines, storage tanks, or process systems that involve flammable gases or vapours. They work by cooling and dissipating the heat of a flame front, thereby extinguishing it before it can propagate further.
π₯ What Do Flame Arresters Do?
-
Prevent explosions in industrial systems by stopping flames from traveling through equipment.
-
Used in industries like oil & gas, chemical, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemical processing.
-
Installed in vent lines, fuel tanks, pipelines, and exhaust systems.
π§ How Do They Work?
-
A flame arrester contains a metallic element or mesh with narrow passages.
-
When a flame front reaches it, the heat is absorbed by the arrester’s material.
-
This cools the flame below ignition temperature, effectively extinguishing it.
β Types of Flame Arresters:
-
End-of-line Flame Arresters β Installed at the end of a pipe to prevent flames from entering.
-
In-line Flame Arresters β Placed within piping systems for both directions of flow.
-
Deflagration Arresters β For low-speed flame fronts.
-
Detonation Arresters β For high-speed and high-pressure explosions.
